Ford recalled more than 100,000 pickups to remedy an air bag flaw that can manifest in a crash.
The issue was detected in an audit of the Ford Rangers done for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford said in documents filed with the federal agency that it’s unaware of any crashes, customer complaints or warranty claims about it.
The side air curtain bags, which can tear during deployment, potentially causing premature pressure loss, were installed in Rangers from December 2022 to this past July.
Recalled models years are 2024 to 2026.
To remedy the defect, Ford dealers will install protective shields between the air bag and inner sheet metal on both the left and right sides.
The automaker was scheduled to mail safety-risk notices to owners on Sept. 5 and indicated it would mail follow-up notices once the remedy is ready for installation, estimated to be in the fourth quarter.
