Survey Shows What Technicians Want
Data gathered by the ASE Training Managers Council shows that service technicians prefer classroom or instructor-led training and hands-on lab work over online or self-led training.

Results from the 2026 Training Benchmarks Survey by the ASE Training Managers Council show that even in the internet age, human-led classes are still in demand.
This year survey participation grew approximately 65%, which the council said reflects stronger engagement from technicians, instructors and industry stakeholders.
According to the council, the survey is intended to provide “valuable insights into technician training needs, industry trends and workforce development priorities across the automotive, truck and collision repair sectors.”
“The growth in participation this year is a strong signal that our industry is invested in shaping better training opportunities,” said ATMC President Matt Shepanek.
Survey data show that access to training has improved over the past four years, but the top reasons for lack of access were desired topics and quality training being unavailable.
As for the learning environment, almost 20% of respondents reported wanting classroom or instructor-led learning, but only about 15% reported that as the current reality. Hands-on lab learning was also ranked as a top need that doesn’t match today's conditions.
The most requested training topics were hybrid/electric vehicle systems at 63%, electrical/electronic systems at 60%, and advanced engine performance and advanced driver-assistance systems, which tied at 43%.
