General Motors debuted an electric-vehicle charging adapter that opens up nearly 18,000 Tesla fast chargers to GM consumers.

The GM-approved North American Charging System DC adapter will initially be available only to U.S. consumers, followed by those in Canada late this year. The adapters will sell for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $225 on GM’s mobile applications, which will also provide Tesla charger locations, show station status, and allow charging payments.

Spotty public charger stations and sometimes unreliable chargers have consistently ranked high among the reasons many consumers have hesitated to try EVs. In announcing the chargers’ availability, GM reiterated its goal of ultimately having an all-electric lineup. Like other automakers, it recently scaled back earlier EV production plans to adjust for slower-than-expected mass-market adoption, cutting 2024 production from about 300,000 units to about 250,000.

“GM’s ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public charging infrastructure is an integral part of our commitment to an all-electric future,” said Vice President of GM Energy Wade Sheffer in a press release on the Tesla charging adapters.

“Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless.”

GM said it will tap more than one supplier for the adapters, which can be used at any charger with the Tesla-developed NACS connector technology. It said that opening up GM vehicles to the charging stations brings the total number of public chargers available to them to 231,800 in North America.

The Tesla connection follows GM's hiring of a former Tesla executive to head its EV battery business early this year.
