BMW Shares Cars’ Carbon Footprints
New app feature launched in Europe calculates emissions for trips plus model’s production pollution total.

Emissions are calculated based on energy use on trips combined with production-phase pollutants total.

BMW drivers can now see the environmental impact each trip in their wheels makes.
The German automaker added the carbon dioxide equivalent metric to its My BMW and Mini applications based on vehicle footprint and the route driven.
Initially launching in Europe, the feature is available through the My Trips function for all drivetrains of select models BMW has calculated a carbon footprint for.
Emissions are calculated based on energy use and charging current type. Each trip’s usage is combined with the CO2 emissions from that vehicle’s manufacture, including processing of raw materials and transport of the vehicle. The figures are compared to zero CO2 when using energy from 100% renewable sources and with the figures for the relevant country’s national energy mix.
BMW didn’t indicate a schedule for expanding the feature to U.S.-based models. More than 14 million consumers around the world use the apps, and about two million actively use the My Trips function.
My BMW also includes an electric-vehicle analysis feature introduced last year that lets drivers of gas-powered models see how many trips they could have made on one EV charge.
